Terrorist and My Interpretation

The Poem, in its language, is rather dark and as a reader you can feel the anger of the poet. This poem is like many out of the book Tocqueville. The anger and voice any many of the poems are really what caught my eye. The language that is used can be at times confusing, so the only real connection I made was through the tone. Although, as a reader you can start to decipher some of the text and its overall meaning. The act of studying the piece has to take place.

In the poem Terrorist there is a lot of detail of body parts and death that leads to some interesting images. The poet mentions seeing strewn corpses, ashes of bones, shedding skin, all images of death in some way. This is where I came to understand the context of this poem. It obviously resembles mass death in some way. Possibly death via terrorism and the feelings a person has if they lost someone to such act. I believe the speaker of the poem wanting to die or has died to be with the person they lost

The poem connects to me in a such a way because I grew up when terrorism was at its finest. 911 just happened when I was in grade school and from then until now I have heard of many people who have lost their lives to a terrorist. I can't relate on an emotional level but I can understand the language of the poem and how it could connect it to a person who has lost someone via terrorism. It is an awful act of mass murder and I believe Khaled layered the poem with language that reflects such an act.

Don't Marry the Fly

Don't Marry the Fly was my favorite chapter thus far in Writing Down the Bones. This chapter brings light to the ever so prominent problem between the reader and writers communication through words. Most people spend their lives communicating with one person at one time, making the message clear between the listener and communicator. However, authors have the opportunity to communicate with millions at different times of day or even years. If the message isn't clearly stated then confusion sets in and that is what is displayed in this chapter.

The book goes onto explain that when faced with opportunities to write about many different details of a place environment or person, its essential to know your story and the direction your heading in. In the book the author refers this reference to a fly in a diner. If the story is about the diner, acknowledge the fly but don't obsess on it. If you get to focused on the fly then the millions of readers would essentially be lost, knowing that we were previously discussing the diner.

This particular chapter really hit home with my individual struggles of comprehending some novels i've read in the past. I, myself tend to wonder when reading, I enjoy that aspect of it. I'll be reading a line in a book then start thinking of creative ways to do an intro for an interview piece or different ways to create a 3 dimensional environment in my 3D software. This however, is only temporary and I quickly get back to the book. Up until now I've always believed my self to no be that great of reader but really I read fine and its quite possible that the communication is lost between me and the writer. Like the fly on the diner table, my attention is drawn because the author spent to much time explaining irrelevant facts.

This goes to say that if this particular phenomenon happens it doesn't mean the writer is "bad". For some, the over emphasis on minute details might make the story. For others like me, it might make the mind wonder. I't all goes back to writers having to communicate with millions, a task that sounds quite daunting to tell you the truth.

Lens and it's Impact

A poem from Reginald Shepherd's Wrong, is crafted in ways that resemble a fine art pice, nothing is definitive and everything is up for interpretation. Much like what poetry should be, a complex mask that hides the true feelings of said author. like a puzzle that needs solving but somehow can never be completely figured out. Lens is a poem in which I believe to encourage my curiosity to see behind that mask and beat that puzzle.

In the first couple read throughs of this poem, the reader believes the author to be talking about the sky and its beauty. Where colors of white and blue are used to paint those images in your head. When these images are true to the poem, it is not the focal point. My focus is drawn to the ambiguous figure that is slightly hinted at throughout the poem. The sky imagery paints a nice setting at the beginning of the poem and then the phrase, "You whom I have lied to, you whom I've told the truth," is used. That phrase is the center piece for my understanding of this poem, it's a poem of a hire being, a god per say, and the struggle to reach that god.

The entire poem has complex phrases and meanings. Some which can make sense, others are to skewed in their order that comprehension is near impossible. Even with those near impossible phrases a reader can still make sense of the overall meaning of this poem. It might not be what I interpreted it to be, but thats the beauty of poetry, like a fine art piece nothing is definitive and everything is open to interpretation.

Intro to My Life

My Name is Derrick Lee and I am an Electronic Media and Film Studies major with a minor in Marketing. My hopes with this combination of major and minor is to become part of a creative team in an add firm, either assisting of producing commercials. Hopefully I'll be able to move onto this dream soon assuming I graduate this semester, fingers crossed.
I came to Eastern 4 years ago from a small town in Indiana, Plymouth. That town is located about 35 min south of South Bend, where University of Notre Dame is located. I decided to come to Eastern for their track and field program to further my pole vaulting career. It was fun for one year but I decided to move away from sports and focus on my education and career.
That leap turned out to be the right move for me. I ended up working in Public Access for two year in Ann Arbor as a video editor. That job then led to me being confident enough in my skills to start my own video production company, Edit 1 Productions. I have been relatively successful in that venture with three consecutive lucrative clients.
That wasn't enough experience for me however, I had a slow last summer because Edit 1 was my only income and the summer months are very slow for me. I started applying for any job I could find and eventually heard back from WXYZ channel 7. I went through the most intense interview process i've had to face to this date and got the job as a video editor there.
